Lindy's Downtown Market was founded in October of 1958 by Clarence “Lindy” Linsley and his wife Florence. When the business first opened – there were only 2 aisles in a small store front on the square in Washington. As the business grew, it was realized that more space was needed so in 1970, the store moved to its current location on Peoria Street, sharing a building with Ben Franklin. While Lindy's only took up one third of the building, we had still tripled our size from the previous location.
In 1988, Lindy's took over the whole building, expanding to a nine aisle store with a huge produce section and meat department. That was our first big remodel, adding on a large area for the bakery and deli as well as updating the facade of the building. Our second remodel took place in 2001 and included many improvements to the building
Quality is the name of the game when it comes to the food on our shelves. We know that people come here to provide healthy, delicious food for their families and we know how important good, quality products are to our customers. Our deli still makes salads and dishes by hand, from scratch. The ovens in our bakery are fired up 6 days a week to bake the freshest breads, pies, and cookies possible. Produce is delivered 3 (sometimes 4!) times a week to ensure that the fruits and vegetables on our shelves are crisp and delicious. We have meat cutters in the building 7 days a week to cut the highest quality steaks, roasts, and chops for our customers.
Grocery stores today don't cater to people who love food and love to cook. Lindy's fills that void. This is a store for people who are passionate about food, cooking, and enjoying those things with family and friends. We offer the most unique products, some of which can't be found anywhere else. We search out local sources to support our community and ensure quality and freshness.
We do our best to carry the products that our customers want to see on our shelves. We still ask if you'd like a paper or plastic sac, and our stock boys still carry your groceries to your car for you.
We may have grown and changed a lot over the years, but some things haven't changed a bit. Just like Clarence did in the very beginning, we still believe that providing our customers with excellent service is the most important part of our business.
